In the heart of the city of Siena, a few steps from the Duomo and Piazza del Campo, the Pinacoteca Nazionale houses the most important collection of paintings of the Sienese school, from the gold backgrounds of the origins,
through the masterpieces of the Renaissance and Mannerism, up to the
Seventeenth century.
The museum’s
itinerary offers a complete overview of the rich history of Sienese art, interspersed
with sudden breathtaking views over the roofs of the city.
Come and
admire the masterpieces of Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini, Pietro and
Ambrogio Lorenzetti; the golden century of Sienese art before the tragic black
plague.
Let yourself be amazed by the sophistication of the Renaissance with the artwork of
Giovanni di Paolo, Sano di Pietro, Sassetta, Pinturicchio, Vecchietta, Matteo
di Giovanni and the universal genius of Francesco di Giorgio Martini.
Enjoy the
wonderful atmospheres and intimate tones of our Sixteenth and
Seventeenth-century pieces that include the masterpieces of Domenico Beccafumi,
Sodoma and Rutilio Manetti.
The Brigidi
and Buonsignori palaces host the museum since its opening in 1932.
Cesare
Brandi, art historian known for his restoration theory, set up the museum and
wrote its first catalogue. The original nucleus of the gallery was born thanks
to the passionate work of two Sienese scholars, the abbots Giuseppe Ciaccheri
and Luigi de Angelis, who collected the paintings of the most significant
Sienese painters, between 1750 and 1810.
The Renaissance courtyard, where there are the access stairs, is surrounded on three sides by a portico with the cistern in the centre. In the court you can admire a Roman sarcophagus and an Etruscan urn On of the 16th century marble frames shows an inscription which indicates it as coming from the destroyed monastery of Monteoliveto in Porta Tufi in Siena. On the side of the court without a portico there is, within a tabernacle, a fresco depicting the Pietà by Sienese school of the end of the 14th century.
